Section 19 of PA 12 of 2014 requires school district to conduct a specified number of fire, tornado, and lock-down drills with their students each year (see the link to the left for the full legislation). The schedule for these drill must be submitted to the county emergency management coordinator no later than September 15th of each year.
Once schools complete a safety drill, they must document the date, time, and type of the drill and post that information on its website within 30 school days. Safety drill records must also be maintained on the website for 3 years. The links to those drill records are available on the left.
MI HEARTSafe School Award Program
We are proud to report that all of the Montrose schools have been awarded the MI HEARTSafe School Award in recongition of their efforts to prevent sudden cardiac death of the young (SCDY) by screening its athletes for inherited syndromes that predispose to sudden cardiac arrest and preparing for a cardiac emergency. Members of this school community know how to recognize the signs of a sudden cardiac arrest and respond quickly by calling 9-1-1 and using CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) until EMS arrives.In order to achieve this designation, schools must:
- Maintain a written cariac emergency response plan and review it annually.
- Establsih and train a cardiac emergency response team
- Ensure that at least 10% of staff, 50% of coaches including 100% of head coaches, and 100% of P.E. staff with current CPR/AED certification.
- Maintain a sufficient number of accessible, properly maintained and inspected AEDs, ready to use, with signs identifying AED locations.
- Perform at least one cardiac emergency response drill each year.
- Complete all athletic pre-participation screening with the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) form (updated in 2010).
